Google has dedicated its doodle to Indian scientist Vikram Sarabhai on his birth anniversary.Today his 100th Anniversary , Who is also called Father of ISRO.The huge success that India has achieved in such large missions by making so much progress in space science, only goes to the great scientist Vikram Sarabhai. Vikram Sarabhai’s doodle is made by Mumbai artist Pawan Rajurkar.
He was born on 12 August 1919 in Ahmedabad,Gujarat . Since childhood, his ears were big like Mahatma Gandhi. At that time no one was aware that this child would later become famous scientist in the country and the world , due to his greatness and would leave his incredible mark in space. His father Mr. Ambalal Sarabhai was a thriving industrialist and owned several mills in Gujarat. Sarabhai was born into a family with full of comforts. He was educated in a family-run school that also had workshops to give his curiosity and knowledge to science. At the age of 18, he reached Cambridge on the recommendation of family friend Rabindranath Tagore. He received his doctorate from St. John’s College, Cambridge University. He was a scientist who always helped the young scientist to progress. Sarabhai established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad in 1947.
However, at the start of the Second World War, he arrived at the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) in Bangalore to conduct research under the aegis of Nobel Laureate Dr. CV Raman. He met young scientist Homi Jahangir Bhabha at IIS. It was here that he also met classical dancer Mrinalini Swaminathan whom he fell in love with. When American Physicist and Nobel Prize winner Robert Millikan came to India for the World Survey of Cosmic Ray Intensity, he helped him in the Balloon Experiment. This further fueled his interest in the properties of cosmic ridge and upper atmosphere.
Nearly 15 years later, when scientists considered satellites as an important tool for space studies, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Homi Bhabha supported the establishment of the Indian National Committee for Space Research, with Sarabhai as president. Sarabhai always thought of himself as a scientist.
Vikram Sarabhai has been awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1962. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the Padma Vibhushan (posthumously) in 1972.
How was ISRO established:-
The establishment of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was one of the great achievements of Vikram Sarabhai. After the launch of Russian Sputnik, he persuaded the government about the importance of the space program for a developing country like India and said that the country needs it. Dr. Sarabhai had emphasized the importance of space program in his quote.
Let me tell you, apart from ISRO and PRL, they established many institutions. Vikram Sarabhai had also served as the chairman of the ‘Atomic Energy Commission’. He has played an important role in the establishment of ‘Indian Institute of Management’, Ahmedabad, along with other industrialists based in Ahmedabad.
He started the space program from Thumba, a village in Thiruvananthapuram where neither the infrastructure nor the office built there had a roof. Apart from his work, he was also known for his nature.
It is said that Vikram, who was seated with special people of the world, was seen wearing slippers and whistling at the laboratory. He carried his briefcase himself. He used to talk to the Prime Minister of the country like his junior. He was called a dreamer. His dream has taken India to the moon today.
Established IIM Ahmedabad:-
Along with being the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, He has played an important role in the establishment of ‘Indian Institute of Management’, Ahmedabad, along with other industrialists based in Ahmedabad. He also played an important role in the Indian Space Research Organization. Sarabhai also played an important role in the launch of the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) when he negotiated with NASA in 1966.
Played Important role in country’s first satellite launch:-
He was also instrumental in launching the country’s first satellite Aryabhata. Through the ‘Nehru Institute of Development’, he played an important role in the progress of Gujarat. He was the president and member of many science and research related institutions in India and abroad. Giving India talent like Abdul Kalam
Dr. Sarabhai was one of the few scientists of his time who helped the scientists working with him and especially the young scientists to progress. He played a key role in nurturing his talents in the early phase of Dr. Abdul Kalam’s career. Dr. Kalam himself said that he was a newcomer in that field. Dr. Sarabhai took a lot of interest in him and nurtured his talent.
As India’s ambitious Chandrayaan-2 mission is progressing towards success, it is also working to carry forward the story that was laid by Vikram Sarabhai. Today on his 100th birthday, Google has memorized the doodle. Seeing his
contribution, the Government of India honored him with Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
